This is an ooooold painting, from '97. Oil on canvas, about 18 by 24 inches. I noticed it when I was poking around in my art room and was surprised that I hadn't put it up here yet, because it has always been one of my personal favorites. It has a lot of flaws because at the time I didn't have any formal training in painting (but luckily I've been painting in oil since I was about 12, so I had some idea of what I was doing). I didn't know how to properly use color in a painting and I could have used more variety in my brushstrokes. But I still feel happy every time I look at this picture. The photo killed the color and contrast, but I tried to adjust it to as close to the actual painting as I could.
Gooseberry Falls is in northeastern Minnesota, along the shore of Lake Superior. Gorgeous country! This is the smaller part of the lower falls and probably the least impressive part of the falls, but it has always been my favorite. It was the first part of Gooseberry Falls that I ever saw, and my friend and I used to go swimming in the pool below. Lately it has been so dry that this part is now little more than a trickle.
Referenced from a photo that I took.
I really need to do some more oil paintings, but they take so much time.
Definitely a fave. I've never been to Gooseberry falls, but I know the area you're referring too. Superior National Forest has got to be one of the most gorgeous places on earth. Especially in the winter!
Well, I don't know what "flaws" there may be, it looks like a pretty damn good painting to me. I've never had the chance to work with oils, but I've heard their incredibly tricky.
That's just BEAUTIFUL! Even with little skill and bad contrast, it's beautiful!

I love your water! Great work, especially when considering your age (not that young can't be good).
One of the best water-related pictures I've seen for a while.
The only thing that seems to be a bit dull, is that background. It's too grey or something. Or maybe it's just the blueish color of the trees on the right.
But I really can see why this is one of your personal favorites.
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
